Advocates, Leslie, Beatriz, Jacob, Carlos, Antonio, Sebastian, Frances, Christopher, Ashley and Steve met with Representative Howard Coble on August 22, 2011, in his Greensboro, NC office. They echoed a big “Thank You” to Representative Coble for his support in congress.
Representative Coble asked the young people which school they would be attending. They talked about their three different schools, and their sports activities. The young folks shared their similar experiences of sometimes having to sit out of a game to snack rather than play, and answer questions from teammates.
Parents shared their stories about diabetes as a family affair. One family laughed about their experience at Scout camp, when the latest technology failed, as well as their backup solution. Another family was taking part in a clinical trial. They had found out that the younger brother had an increased chance of developing T1D in five years. This led us into a discussion of the importance of the Special Diabetes Program, the artificial pancreas technology, and pending FDA guidance. Everyone thanked Representative Coble again, and asked for his continued support of strong NIH and FDA funding.
