Seven Orange County, CA advocates met with Congressman Ed Royce at his office in Orange this afternoon. We were so fortunate to have 2 high school students rush from school to attend this Promise Meeting. They were able to tell the Congressman, first hand, what it’s like living with Type 1 Diabetes as a teenager and also share with him, their hopes for the future!
We were able to share with Congressman Royce some different perspectives on living with this horrible disease. Not only were the teenagers able to share their stories, one of their mothers also shared her hopes and dreams and fears for her daughters future, a father who’s youngest son and oldest son were diagnosed within a month of each other, was able to share his desire for a cure, a young mother who has had Type 1 since she was 11 was able to share the fear she has that her son might one day develop Type 1, and my husband and I, as grandparents were able to talk about the obstacles our grandson has overcome. The main message that each of us conveyed to the Congressman was that each one of us wants to make sure we do everything we can to help find a cure now, so that we can know we helped make a difference. We asked the congressman to do the same.
He was very receptive, asked questions of all of us and promised he would “remember us” and do whatever he could to make sure that federal funding for diabetes research continues. He also mentioned that he had met with one of the scientists who is working on the artificial pancreas and seemed to be very impressed.
