Meeting with Representative Xavier Becerra (CA-31), Kathy Martin and daughter Grace
On August 30, 2011, Grace and her mom, Kathy, met with Representative Xavier Becerra and his Field Deputy Yoomee Ha. Grace, who is six years old, made quite the impression on the Representative with her exuberant and lively attitude.
During the meeting, Kathy read a story about Grace and how their lives have changed since her diagnosis two years ago. At many times throughout the story, Grace would interject her thoughts about diabetes and one point she helped her mom finish the story by yelling "I don't want diabetes anymore!" Grace made sure that everyone at the meeting knew that her birthday wish would be a life free of type 1 diabetes. She even acted like she was blowing out her candles on a cake!
The Representative thought that Grace's wish was great! He shared how he is doing his part to help make her wish come true. He said that he has been a long-time supporter of diabetes research, including supporting research to create the insulin pump, and understands how research can help Grace and others with type 1 diabetes.
